Sample Video

“Dance: The Cutting Edge – Jazz Fusion: Level 1: Vol. I – Vol. II” incorporates steps from a range of jazz styles. Level I: Vol. I starts with center, teaching dancers Three-Step Turns, Lindys, Ball-Changes, Kimbos, Triple-Hip Variations, and other moves that guide them in positioning their upper and lower body in a variety of directions, while in conjunction with one another and the music. There are over 80 skills taught in these two volumes! Dancers are also taught the preparation and balance necessary for turns such as Retiré to Parallel Passé and Skitter/Spotting exercises. Next, they are taken across the floor with basic Jazz Walks, Model Walks, Pas de Bourrées, and Chassés.“Jazz Fusion -Level 1: Vol. I – Vol. II” helps dancers find their looseness by incorporating isolations in their routines. The barre is still incorporated for strength, balance, and isolation purposes; Plié to Parallel Passé and Side Leg Grabs are practiced at the barre. Dancers also complete exercises that enhance the leg and core muscles needed to beautifully execute ballet moves and develop new muscle groups needed for the sassiness of Jazz. Chaîné and Passé turns are used in across the floor combinations and dancers are introduced to Tuck Jumps and Saut de Chats.

While geared to ages six years and older, this level can be adapted to include beginner teens and adults. Instructor Kimberly Beck Thomson is a third-generation dancer with more than 35 years of experience as a studio owner, performer, choreographer, and instructor. She began her love affair with dance as a small child under the tutelage of her mother, Danie Beck, a child prodigy on Broadway.
